Today, thanks to my very wonderful room mate,Angela, I attended a study skills class. I thought, why not? I haven't written an academic paper or attended a graduate class where such submissions were required since about 1980. A little time has lapsed, don't you think? And so I was very pleased for the opportunity for a refresher course on study and academic writing skills. The professor, Martin Walters, who is teaching a four part series, was wonderful. He reminded of some of my 60' era undergraduate professors. I think it was his longish white wavy hair and his demeanor. I loved his energy, his clarity and style of delivery. It turns out this was more than a refresher course. I learned about three models of note taking that are certainly new to me, what reference guide to use, a Harvard guide for quotations and bibliographies and more. Professor Walters imparted a good deal of information and I took copious notes. I am pleased to have this information right up front. This course will help me to consider in my approach to undertaking my studies.
I have three days before classes begin and I want to use them wisely. I am planning a mix of pleasure and preparation. Tomorrow Angela I are joining other international students for a trip to Bunratty Village and Castle and on Sunday a short trip into Limerick City in the morning. The rest of the time I will use to further prepare for the start of classes, which will include some contemplation time. I want to start out totally open to the academic adventure and all I am going to learn. Meditating and asking for guidance is a good way to start off centered and focused.
Sending love from Glocca Morra!!
