“Everytime I am in a practice room looking out over the River Shannon, I think to myself that all I have really ever longed to do was sing, sing all day long.”
This is a quote from a previous blog entry. I was reminded of it, when a lovely new friend,Iza, a young woman from Poland, reminded me that I had written it by ending an email to me with this quote. I was deeply touched. Iza is as passionate about singing, about chant as I and she has a gift for conveying a chant with deep heart and feeling. I shared this poem with her today and now I share it with you. It is more a prayer for the gift and blessing of singing. It is a recent expression of what I continue to feel about singing and chant and the opportunities I have here in Ireland to study the music of my deepest passion, world chant at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance.
Chant is prayer. It is a deep, sonic, resonant expression of the heart spoken through music and text to a Divine Presence, to that Divine Presence within each of us. The world over and no matter the wisdom tradtion or the language of chant, the intention in chanting is the same and expressed by me in the following way:
What greater joy,
this singing to the Divine
from the heart.
What greater joy
than to to sing
to the Divine, to
thank and to praise
the Holy Oneness,praised be thee.
What greater joy
than to sing the words
Divinely inspired,
the melodies
transmitted by the angels,
the messages divined on high.
I pray to my source.
I pray with my music.
I pray and I praise, and
I thank my Source
for the blessed gift of song.
